“That’s Old Aldo,” said Chaz, stretching. “Maybe he’s trying to communicate with you.”

“Yeah,” said Al. “You might wanna steer clear of his picture… unless you have a hankerin’ to meet a dead guy. That portrait is a portal for his ghost.”

“You boys are full of baloney this morning,” said Mom. “Aldo and Timothy, come gather eggs with me, and I’ll tell you about your great-grandfather.”

I wish I was full of baloney this morning, I thought.

We slipped on our shoes and stepped outside. “Aldo was your great-grandfather, which means he was my grandfather,” Mom continued as we walked to the chicken coop. “So I knew him. In fact, when I was growing up, he lived here with us in the farmhouse. His room was in the attic.”

“We should go check out that attic, Aldo,” said Timothy.

“I think not,” I said. “That guy is creepy.” We were inside the chicken run now. I scooped feed from the bucket and tested a piece while I scattered it for the chickens swarming around my feet.

“He wasn’t creepy,” said Mom. “But he was a prankster.”

“What kind of pranks?” I asked.
